The “Backyard Sports” Revival Continues With New Animated Series Announcement

The comeback of one of gaming’s most beloved childhood franchises is showing no signs of slowing down.

What began as the revival of a classic sports video game has quickly grown into something much larger. Following the return of Backyard Baseball and the franchise’s first animated special earlier this year, Playground Productions has officially announced Backyard Sports: The Animated Series, continuing the expansion of the beloved ’90s property into an even bigger entertainment universe.

Revealed during San Diego Comic-Con, the new series will consist of 20 eleven-minute episodes, bringing Pablo Sanchez and the Backyard Kids back for all-new adventures inspired by the iconic franchise that introduced generations of players to neighborhood sports.

The announcement also reunites an impressive voice cast first introduced in January’s animated special. Returning performers include Arturo Castro as Pablo Sanchez, Tiffany Haddish as Kiesha Phillips, Donald Faison as Dante Robinson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Dmitri Petrovich, Utkarsh Ambudkar as Achmed Khan, Deborah Baker Jr. as Kimmy Eckman, Michael Vlamis as Tony Delvecchio, Ashleigh Crystal Hairston as Sunny Day, Vincent Tong as Kenny Kawaguchi and several other familiar voices from the Backyard universe.

The series builds upon the momentum created earlier this year when Backyard Sports made the leap into animation for the very first time through the special Sticky Situation. The short introduced longtime fans to animated versions of the Backyard Kids before premiering on YouTube and later expanding to Prime Video, proving there was still plenty of enthusiasm surrounding the classic franchise more than two decades after its debut.

That excitement has continued growing alongside the return of Backyard Baseball. The reimagined version of the fan-favorite game recently launched on Steam for PC and Mac, with Nintendo, Xbox and PlayStation versions still on the way, introducing the series to both longtime fans and a new generation of young players.

Playground Productions is once again leading the project, with Chief Product Officer Chris Waters serving as showrunner after executive producing the earlier animated special alongside CEO Lindsay Barnett. Juston Gordon-Montgomery returns as supervising director, while Adam Aseraf and Sarah Nevada Smith serve as head writers and co-executive producers.

While a streaming home for the series has yet to be announced, Playground Productions made it clear that this is only the beginning. During the Comic-Con announcement, the company teased plans for a broader “Backyardiverse,” an interconnected expansion designed to unite games, animation, storytelling and sports under one growing franchise.

The continued growth represents a remarkable second chapter for Backyard Sports. Once remembered primarily as one of the defining children’s sports game series of the late 1990s and early 2000s, the franchise has quickly evolved into a multimedia property spanning video games, streaming animation and now a full episodic television series.

As more children discover Pablo Sanchez and the Backyard Kids alongside the adults who grew up playing the original games, the latest announcement signals that this revival is becoming much more than a nostalgic return—it is laying the foundation for the next era of one of gaming’s most enduring family franchises.

Jocelin Cap: Mother of three. That does not include the dog or my husband either! We have a full household of fun and we just love trying new products of all varieties. May not watch as many kids shows as the rest of the family though.
