Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Apparently, now he has his very own holiday.
Continuing to celebrate one of the most recognizable and influential characters in animation history, Nickelodeon has officially declared July 14 as the first-ever annual “SpongeBob Day,” a worldwide celebration honoring the enduring legacy of SpongeBob SquarePants and the generations of fans who have helped transform the optimistic sea sponge into a true global icon.
Timed to coincide with SpongeBob’s birthday within the series, the inaugural celebration will span television, streaming, gaming, social media, music, live attractions and more, making it one of the franchise’s largest coordinated celebrations to date.
Leading the festivities, longtime SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny will host his very first TikTok Live event on July 14, giving fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the beloved series. The special presentation will include never-before-seen alternate endings to the classic episode “Shanghaied,” first looks at upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants and The Patrick Star Show specials, brand-new toy reveals and additional surprises.
The celebration extends far beyond Bikini Bottom’s television screens. Fans can look forward to the launch of The Patrick Star Official YouTube Channel, new content arriving in the record-breaking SpongeBob SquarePants Tower Defense experience on Roblox, the first-ever music release from The Patrick Star Show, all-day programming marathons across Nickelodeon platforms, celebrations at Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts and Nickelodeon Universe theme parks, as well as localized events taking place around the world.
Perhaps fittingly for a character who has become one of the internet’s favorite reaction images, Nickelodeon is even planning an online marketing campaign where SpongeBob will “crash” some of the world’s most recognizable memes as part of the celebration.
Since premiering in 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has grown far beyond a single animated series. What began as the adventures of an endlessly optimistic fry cook living beneath the sea has evolved into one of the defining entertainment franchises of its generation, spanning feature films, television spin-offs, Broadway, video games, theme park attractions, toys, music and an unmistakable place in internet culture.
More than 25 years later, SpongeBob’s infectious optimism, unmistakable laugh and colorful cast of friends continue to resonate with audiences around the globe. The creation of an annual SpongeBob Day is more than just another anniversary—it is a celebration of a character whose impact on animation, pop culture and multiple generations of fans has proven to be timeless.
