American Girl Celebrates 40 Year Anniversary With Modern Take on Historical Characters

Beloved all-American brand American Girl has set the stage for a historic 40-year celebration.

Since the brand’s introduction in the 1980s, American Girl has used dolls and playtime to connect young girls with American history. With characters who have borne witness to the turning points of America’s past — from the days of the Great Depression to the turn of the century — fans have been able to forge connections with girls from different eras who are perhaps more similar to themselves than they would first assume.

Over the years, fans have grown deep bonds with the likes of cherished characters such as Addy, Josefina, and Samantha, exploring their worlds and time periods through the extensive range of dolls, clothing, and accessories, as well as diving into the endless tie-in novels. These interwoven works have allowed fans to gain a deeper understanding of both the characters and the days of yesterday. But there is always one question fans may have found themselves musing — what would these trademark American Girls be like if they existed today?

It’s a question that now has an answer, as for this special anniversary, American Girl has released an all-new range of dolls featuring some of their most revered historical characters with a modern take.

Featuring fan favorites Samantha, Kirsten, Addy, Josefina, Molly, and Felicity, these new dolls give the characters a fresh design spin to follow more modern trends. While we have fresh designs for these beloved characters, there are no new additional fiction companion offerings accompanying this release. Thus, fans can use their own creativity to imagine the modern-day adventures of their favorite historical characters.

Preorders are now open on American Girl’s website for all six girls in this collection, with a slated release of May 1. Dolls retail for $90.00 each.
