Sweet Magnolias is coming to Netflix next month and the series which is based on the Sweet Magnolias novels by Sherryl Woods is going to be huge. We had the opportunity to speak with Logan Allen who will be playing Kyle Townsend on the show, and got to dig into his character as well as some other fun information in our exclusive BSCKids interview.
Logan Allen stars as ‘Kyle Townsend’ in Netflix’s upcoming “Sweet Magnolias” debuting May 19th. The series focuses on three families in South Carolina. He will also star in an episode of AMC’s “Creepshow” airing May 9th. Logan is a big football fan and loves video games. Logan currently resides on a farm full of animals in Florida.
BSKids: Logan, tell us a bit about your character in Sweet Magnolias and how you got cast in the role?
My character, Kyle is a fun, down to Earth, wholesome kid who is an aspiring theatre actor. Kyle is just a very likable character. I got the role when my amazing representation team sent me on the audition. I did the self-tape and then made it to the callback for a second audition. From there, they picked me as Kyle.
Once you knew you had the role, did you get a chance to read any of the books? If not, how did you prepare for the role? Have you been to South Carolina?
I have not read any of the books, but I have been meaning to get to them. I got prepared by studying the character description and talking to the writers. I have been to South Carolina. I have some family that lives near Charleston. I go to the Carolinas to visit the mountains! It’s pretty flat down here in Florida.
Who do you feel you learned the most from while filming and do you have any interesting behind the scenes stories you can tell us?
I think I learned a little from everybody. I got to work with some great actors and actresses in this shoot. They all had different approaches to their characters and different acting styles. I watched them get into character and talked to everyone that I got the chance to work with on both sides of the camera. I learned so much! Also, the crew taught me a lot. I learned about lighting and different cameras. Everybody was so nice from Norman Buckley (one of our directors) to Sheryl Anderson (the showrunner and writer).
There is one funny day when we had a little snack on set. They brought out little potato wedges and they had ketchup near it. I grabbed the ketchup and put in on my potato wedges and went back to the schoolroom. I started eating and my mouth was a little spicy. I thought maybe that was just the wedges but a few seconds later, my mouth was burning bad! I looked over at my mom who is eating the same thing and she looked just fine. So, I finally said something, and apparently there was hot and spicy ketchup there alongside regular ketchup. I guess I grabbed the wrong one.
If you could guest star on another Netflix show which one would it be and why?
Outer Banks would be really cool. The series just came out recently and I binged watched it. I love the whole treasure hunt aspect to it.
Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you.
I grew up playing tackle football. I played center, and my team went undefeated for two seasons. I loved my football days and made some lifelong friends playing. Go Harmony Longhorns!
Tell us about your work on AMC’s Creepshow, how much fun was that?
Creepshow was so much fun to film! It’s an anthology series, so we didn’t shoot my episode very long, but the set was incredible. I’m a big horror fan, so when I got to see the atmosphere the crew made, I was freaking out in excitement! It was a dream come true to work with Greg Nicotero and David Bruckner! I had never had any acting experience in the horror genre before Creepshow but I’ve always watched horror films so It felt very fitting for me and that was amazing. It debuts on TV on May 4th (my episode May 11th).
What is something that scares you?
Nothing really. Certain scary movies get me scared though. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, the Exorcist, the list goes on and on.
Tell us more about your farm in Florida and what a regular day on the farm looks like for you.
My farm just has horses, cows, and chickens at the moment. We do have some ducks on the way! We used to have goats, hogs, and sheep but we don’t have them right now. Most days, I have to feed all the animals and spot clean the horse stalls. Once a week we clean out the horse stalls and ride around to check the fence. About every 2 months we work cows. What’s crazy is I may be filming one day and cleaning horse stalls the next. There are a lot of unexpected things that happen. For example, a fence may break, the cows might get out, a horse can accidentally get hurt, the list could go on. We have to obviously fix all that ASAP. But overall, we just feed and care for the animals daily.
So who is your favorite football team, college and pro, and video game wise what are you currently playing?
My favorite College Football team is the Florida Gators. I was born a Gator fan and have been since! My favorite NFL team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I’m from Orlando FL, so they’re basically our home team. It’s really tough to pick my favorite video game because I have so many but it would have to be NCAA 13.
What should we expect from you in the next few years? What are some of your goals?
I think you guys should expect more projects from me. I’ve never been working as hard as I have these past few years and great stuff has come out of it. Some goals of mine are getting another movie or show by the end of the year and making an award show.
Why should everyone tune in to watch Sweet Magnolias?
You should tune in to Sweet Magnolias because it does something that many shows can’t; it appeals to all audiences. You can sit down with your parents and grandparents and all enjoy the characters, storylines, comedy, drama, the whole show! This is something I would personally tune in to watch myself! It’s truly an amazing, and wholesome family show.
