Fathom Events has turned into the premiere provider of cult movie theater movie events. Since last summer Fathom Events has teamed up with a long list of great companies to bring familiar and new faces alike to special events in select theatres, from “Barbie”, “Monster High” to the likes of the icon of the house of Mouse, or even anime feature films or “Doctor Who.” Now more than ever, we are seeing how strong fandoms are as they continue to bring people together.
Last year and into this year we have recently seen Fathom Events working alongside GKIDS to bring some of the most beloved films from Studio Ghibli back to American theatres such as Spirited Away. But that was only the beginning as this collaborative effort moves forward into the summer- and with it even more films from the famed studio.
According to a new press release from Fathom Events, following that initial success of showing Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke in theaters. GKIDS and Fathom Events are teaming up to bring a series of anime classics to US theatergoers throughout 2017 with Studio Ghibli Fest. The festival will feature six films from Studio Ghibli as well as a selection of new releases from GKIDS and an ongoing short film mini-festival.
The festival will begin with My Neighbor Totoro (1988) on Sunday, June 25 and Monday, June 26. Then Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) on July 23 & 24, Castle in the Sky (1986) on August 27 & 28, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) on September 24 & 25, Howl’s Moving Castle on November 26 & 27 (2004), and a special run of Oscar winner Spirited Away (2001) in time for Halloween, on October 29 & 30. No sign of Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies though.
However, the festival gets even more special. GKIDS and Fathom are also partnering to present the US premiere release of Mune: Guardian of the Moon — a delightful children’s fantasy flick from the producers of The Little Prince.
“We are thrilled to be expanding our successful partnership with Fathom to bring Studio Ghibli and other GKIDS films to movie theaters nationwide,” said GKIDS CEO Eric Beckman. “Together we are creating an exciting and unique cinema event experience for Studio Ghibli fans to come celebrate their favorite films, while introducing wide new audiences to some of the most amazing animated films of all time.”
