Netflix is amazing for a lot of reasons but right now the streaming service has a surprisingly large amount of animated movies you can watch at any given moment. While the best Disney movies ever may not be available, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some fantastic Disney animated features you can watch whenever you or your children have the desire.
Robin Hood
This one of my all time favorite adaptations ever into animated film. Disney took one of the most well known classic tales and recast all the characters as animals and it is amazing. I almost always associated Robin Hood as a fox because of the movie and I hold a soft spot in my heart for the very old animation style.
Hercules
I always loved this one. The animation style is beautifully simplistic and the tales woven in mythology were so interesting. The film reworked the mythology of the famous Hercules to sit within the Disney way of life but it was still wonderful at sparking imagination in viewers. Not to mention to hilarious and scene stealing performance of James Woods as Hades and Danny DeVito as Phil. And who among us didn’t want a Pegasus of our own after this movie came out?
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Despite being way “Disneyfied” when compared to the original Victor Hugo novel, this animated feature has some of the best original songs and was still a beautiful love story. It was a bit dark when examined closely but in the end, this film sort of represents the end of an era in Disney animated features and we love it for that.
Mulan
This is another one of those late 1990’s Disney films that is just gold if you ask me. It is the adaptation of the legend of Hua Mulan, a young woman who pretended to be a man to spare her elderly father from having to go to war. Not to mention some of the amazing original songs that define this tale. And if you don’t LOVE Eddie Murphy as Mushu the dragon, then something is wrong!
Fantasia
This one might be a little bit more intense than the younger viewers need to see but its one the most iconic Disney animated features. It came out in 1940 and features eight animated shorts set to classic music conducted by Leopold Stokowski. This film is the first appearance of Mickey Mouse in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” which stands as one of the most famous incarnations of a Disney character. You can also watch Fantasia 2000 on Netflix right now.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Like Fantasia, this one is sort of dark for the young crowd and also should be mentioned isn’t necessarily considered to be a Disney Animated film. However, it includes classic characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Woody Woodpecker to appear alongside the Disney characters in this adaptation of Gary K. Wolf’s Who Censored Roger Rabbit? novel so it sort of a Disney film.
But the best part isn’t the fact they mixed cartoons and the real world flawlessly (almost anyway) its definitely the lead actor Bob Hoskins as burned-out private investigator, Eddie Valiant.
