Halloween Movies Scared Up For You And The Kids!

HOCUS POCUS, Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, 1993

What could you say is the best thing about October? It could be that fall is its season. Or it could be “everything” pumpkins and apples. No?  Oh, what about those fun hayrides  and corn mazes? Of course not. Then what’s the best thing about the month? Why it’s the only month considered to be more spooky than the rest because of its famous holiday, Halloween!

Ah, Halloween! For the entire month of October you’re bound to see some fang-tastic decorations in your local community, those awesome Halloween extravaganza celebrations, some yummy treats and costumes already on store shelves, hearing those creepy musical numbers on the radio and more. But I’m sure I can talk for most people when a bigger portion of the month is associated with all those terrifyingly made horror movies, spooky television show premieres and live action creepy paranormal shows.

Television is a big part in my household during holidays. Especially during Halloween. There’s nothing like being able to sit down with a bowl of popcorn, switching on the television and seeing your favorite show’s new Halloween episode or the best movie ever made. But with kids in the house, it’s mostly mediocre shows and movies that can be watched while present. Of course lots of parents have no issues with that, but it’s like when bedtime rolls around, time for big kid TV.

As an avid horror fan, I look forward to every one of them during October. Though I’ve always been a fanatic for the more older audience films, there’s nothing like taking it down a few notches and enjoying the fun-filled Halloween thrills directed more toward children. Every year, for as long as I can remember, we’ve watched Disney Channel’s presentation of movies during the month and of course, we can’t forget about ABC Family’s 13 Nights of Halloween. Between these two great networks, adult and kid alike can be entertained for hours and hours on end.

Certainly there are your most favorite movies and then there’s your least favorites. One captures your full attention while another is a real yawner. You might like the effects better in this one and think they need serious work in the next one. How ever you set up your ideal spook movie fest, it’s a good time for people to get together and enjoy some quality movie time. Especially during this time. Truly, there is nothing like being able to sit down, relax, flip on the television and immerse yourselves in a thriller movie marathon.

So, can you guess which movies I think are the best recommended for a haunting movie marathon while the kiddos are awake? Go ahead and check them out below! I bet your favorites are some of mine:

“Under Wraps”

Three kids get curious about a house after an old neighbor dies. The friends heard rumors about him being a strange old man and decided to investigate that themselves. While exploring, they go into the basement only to awaken a mummy from it’s 3,000 year sleep and a whole adventure begins with hilarity and criminal mischief.

This is one of the funniest movies Disney has created! It’s got a bit of a historical feel along with a great variety of comedy, fluffy romance and mystery. My family never gives up a time when we can watch this!

“Halloweentown”

This four-part movie series follows Marney, Dillon and Sophie, three kids who learn their mother and grandmother are witches who grew up in an alternate world, Halloweentown. They’re followed throughout the years as they face many villains and hard decisions that can topple one or both worlds, human and Halloweentown.

For years, these have been a past time to watch. “Halloweentown” is one of the greats that will be a family love for years to come! (I still got to buy the DVDs for it! I want to watch it all year round!)

“Double, Double, Toil and Trouble”

Young twin girls are embarking on the adventure of a lifetime when they attempt to foil a plan made by their aunt using the moonstone. They must do whatever they can to save their family home.

An Olsen twin mystery movie! Never get tired of these! Being a fan of the twins’ movies, you can’t help but love the adorableness and mystery in this one! Plus, the twins star in it! Who doesn’t love them?

“The Nightmare Before Christmas”

Follow the adventures of Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloweetown. Bored with the same routine of scaring people in the human world, he comes upon Christmastown and realizes Christmas must become his. Plotting to kidnap Santa and taking over the role, Jack discovers that his plans don’t go as, well, planned.

A movie that can be watched during Halloween AND Christmas. These are two holidays I never thought could cross into each other easy enough and this movie does a crossover brilliantly!

“Monster House”

Three kids believe a house in their neighborhood is a living monster. As Halloween is just around the corner, they feel the need to destroy the house before kids meet a nasty end.

I have to admit, this kinda creeped me out when I first saw it. Sure it being an animated movie, it shouldn’t scare me, an adult, but it was crazy strange. I think I tip-toed around my own house for awhile after watching this. But don’t worry, it’s still an awesome movie to watch for Halloween!

“Ernest Scared Stupid”

Simple-minded Ernest works as a garbage collector in a small town. After accidentally unleashing an evil troll who begins turning local children into dolls, he must work together with old lady Hackmore on a way to get rid of this menace and bring everything back to normal.

As a fan of Ernest P. Worhel, I am deeply immersed in this movie! I’ve seen every single Ernest movie there is, but this one is the top notch! If you need a serious laugh while enjoying a Halloween thrill, this is the movie for you!

“The Halloween Tree”

After their friend gets kidnapped by mysterious beings, they must find a way to save them. Along the way, they learn about Halloween customs and its beginning.

I learned a lot about Halloween thanks to this movie. Plus, it’s an old-fashioned favorite that I am happy to share with my own kids.

“The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It”

After finding a strange book in a mysterious bookshop, a girl and her brother realize that reading it not only makes your imagination work overtime, but can also bring it to life. Now they must do whatever possible to stop this horrible thing from feasting on their friends.

Being a fan of R.L. Stine, there’s no doubt I was going to take a glance at this movie. It’s creepy, gory and fun all at the same time. Don’t worry, by ‘gory’, I meant that creature was just a little too…slimy. Definitely watch this though!

“The Scream Team”

Two children’s grandfather is unable to rest in peace because of a seriously angry spirit. With the assistance of a few crazy and funny ghosts, they’re able to get to the bottom of this spirit that is notoriously feared!

I’m a sucker for ghost movies. What can I say? And this one turned out to be a pretty good one. A lot of people I know didn’t really seem thrilled at the prospect of this one, but I enjoyed it. It was a simple, yet awesome movie.

“Spooky Buddies”

The Buddies are on a fun adventure once more! The pups get together for Halloween time and explore a haunted mansion, only to stumble upon something a whole lot more.

Love the Buddies! This is just one of their other crazy adventures I’ve enjoyed watching! And the costumes they wore were just super adorable! Plus, talking puppies!

“Mom’s Got A Date With A Vampire”

Their mom needed to get out more. Of course, what better way to do that than setting her up on a date. They set their mom up with a strange man who isn’t exactly what he appears to be. Yeah, they start going crazy the second they find out their mom was going out on a date with a vampire!

A stinker for vampires is what I am! And when I saw this one, I had a good laugh and the kids loved it! Though I became careful about who I dated for awhile…gotta check for those sharp canines.

“Don’t Look Under The Bed”

It was getting out of hand. Every prank found was blamed on her. Needing to get down to the bottom of it all, she teams up with an imaginary friend to defeat the boogeyman who has been framing her for everything happening in the community.

Lots of kids heard stories about the ‘boogeyman’ in the closet or ‘monster’ under the bed. But my imaginary friend was never a knight to help save the day from them. What a different perspective I got after watching this one! It was a great movie for me and the kids to get into!

“Hocus Pocus”

Moving to Salem changed the life of Max and his sister Dani. The siblings along with their friend, Allison, find themselves in an old historical house belonging to supposed witches. Max dismisses the tale Allison speaks of as superstitious and frees the three evil witch sisters. With the help of an immortal feline named Binx, who used to be human, they must prevent the witches from becoming immortal until the dawn.

This is the top children’s Halloween movie EVER! And I seriously mean, EVER! It was around when I was just a little one and it’s around while my own are growing up! I don’t think anybody’s ever gotten tired of seeing three strange-minded witches making their way in the modern world only to be outwitted by a trio of kids. If you’ve never seen it, PLEASE watch it! You won’t regret it!

So, is your favorites listed here? Go ahead and tell us what you watch during Halloween time?
