Nearing that of its third-year anniversary later this year, Disney’s princess in training Sofia has her share of adventures filled with life lessons…and all the magic one associates with a Disney princess. But perhaps that might just be the start of what is ahead for this young royal.
Three seasons in viewers have followed the once ordinary girl from the village life change before her eyes when her mother married the king of the kingdom and she herself became a princess overnight. From dealing with the ups and downs of growing up, the challenges of a blended family, forming bonds and relationships with her step siblings, attending a new school are usually feats that many face and can be more challenging more often than not. Add in learning how to become a proper princess, finding a balance between her two worlds and a magic amulet that rewards or punishes her for actions…
Okay, that is less ordinary. And a lot more to take on.
Yet somehow the bright eyed and optimistic Sofia is able to handle it and even venture into a world of magic thanks the world she lives in, but also her special amulet. The Amulet of Avalor to be more specific. A gift upon her arrival to her new home in the castle, Sofia is bestowed this special necklace unaware of the implications it will have on her life. With each deed she performs more often than not something happens. Helping animals in need earned her the ability to converse with animals and lead into the bright friendship she has with Clover the rabbit, and the birds Mia and Robin. But say, getting too full of oneself leaves someone feeling foggy in the throat.
Even though there is a lot of aspects played around with in Sofia the First, ranging from that of slice-of-life tales, school life instances, friendship and family play major roles. Yet the most exciting could be argued to be the addition of magical appearances.
In times of trouble when Sofia finds her back against the fall her amulet will glow and summon one of the amulet’s previous wearer to help out- mainly the Disney Princess.
Over the past current fifty-four episodes fans have seen the worlds of many Disney classics collide and arrive to Sofia’s aid. From Cinderella helping Sofia make amends with her step-sister, reminded by Snow White to follow her instances, and Mulan encoring Sofia and her friends that they are much stronger than they know.
With so many beloved royals appearing alongside Sofia it would almost seem as if they all have… but yet there are still a few faces yet to appear and help Sofia in a time of need.
And next month Pixar’s first princess Merida arrives on Sofia the First at the start of a four part story arc “The Secret Library.” During which Sofia’s Aunt Tilly returns to give her a gift that will unlock a secret world and will appoint Sofia as a storykeeper of magical books. Part one, featuring the Scottish princess is slated to air on the twelfth of October.
But, if one cannot wait to see Merida’s arrival and what new adventures are ahead for Sofia, a illustrated storybook and e-book version are set to arrive on the eight of the month.
It has not been that uncommon for Sofia the First to venture into other worlds, for that matter her own kingdom is set in a fictional universe full of other kingdoms with diverse roots. But the addition of another plane is interesting as there is still that can be explored within the boundaries of what has already been established. It will be interesting to see how this arc works out and what it will lead to. Never mind the fact we get to see more love for Merida, she has not been really focused on much since Frozen’s arrival. With any luck her cameo will last longer than some of her fellow princesses.
