It’s a Little Book by Lane Smith – Review

It’s a Book! by Lane Smith was an instant classic (one deserving of the cliche) that on the surface was a great read, but when you took the time to dig a bit deeper became something special and funny at the same time. While Lane may not have written the book with such a statement in mind, It’s a Book! makes a thunderous statement that kids should really think about. Well, It’s a Little Book allows you to introduce an even younger generation to the brilliance of Lane Smith in a great board book package. The two characters of the monkey and the donkey are well represented again in It’s a Little Book, and we just need to make sure someone is changing their diapers from time to time, as well. Put down the Tablet, the revolution is over-rated–long live the printed book!

Now in diapers! For the youngest of readers who still prefer to chew on a book rather than read it, It’s a Little Book asks what a book is for–Is it for chewing? Is it for wearing?–and answers the question in a warm and charming way. As funny and captivating as the bestselling It’s a Book, It’s a Little Book promises to delight a new generation of readers.

My boys love this book, and they love reading it their little sister, who has no idea what e-mail is right now (but probably will before the age of three). She just loves the “Is it for riding?” page, where we get to witness baby donkey riding the dog. The artwork is as wonderful as ever, and Lane Smith does this adaptation for the little ones perfectly. “It’s a book, silly.”
