Sesame Street objects to Obama campaign ad

Sesame Street has been in the news since Mitt Romney’s pledge to eliminate public funding for PBS, suggests that Romney is targeting Big Bird instead of corporate criminals.  But Sesame Street has made it clear that they are not part of the latest ad campaign for President Obama.

The Sesame Workshop, which produces the children’s show, has issued a strongly worded statement asking that a new ad featuring Big Bird be removed.  “Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns,” Sesame Workshop said Tuesday. “We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.”  The ad was a response to Mitt’s comments about eliminating public funding for the show.  “Bernie Madoff. Ken Lay. Dennis Kozlowski. Criminals. Gluttons of greed. And the evil genius who towered over them?” a voice-over intones in the ad, which is posted on the BarackObama.com YouTube page and is credited to Obama for America. “One man has the guts to speak his name.”

The “Big Bird” segment of last week’s debate was one of the most resonating moments of the political face-off, with everyone from “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart to PBS CEO Paula Kerger weighing in.  The oversized avian himself claimed to have missed the moment, saying in a statement via Sesame Workshop, “My bed time is usually 7:45, but I was really tired yesterday and fell asleep at 7! Did I miss anything last night?”  Big Bird also turned up on “Saturday Night Live” to say he had received many tweets about the debate — from other birds.  What do you think of this?
