Selena Gomez grew up in front of us as the star of Disney’s incredibly popular television series, “Wizards of Waverley Place,” and as she matured, so it seems, has her style. Never far from the spotlight these days, it’s clear the actress and pop star has become a style sensation, with a look that is always fresh but classic. We check out what is behind Selena’s signature look and how she remains a style icon for young girls.

The Two sides of Selena

Her stylist, Basia Richard, recently revealed that Selena likes to go for a different look depending on whether she is representing herself as a singer or an actress.

“As a musician, she wants to be sexier and more grown up,” Richard recently said during an interview with InStyle.

However, as an actress, we can see that Miss Gomez is going for the soft and glamorous look of a Hollywood star.

Her Less is More Attitude

Whether she’s on the red carpet or spotted in Starbucks, Gomez is never overly made-up or heavily accessorised.

“My favourite fashion tip would probably be ‘less is more’, especially when it comes it accessories,” she said in an interview with Seventeen magazine.

Although she does recommend keeping lots of scarves and high heels on hand if you ever need to dress up a casual outfit.

“Three things that girls must have in their closet: jeans, heels, and a scarf,” she said.

Wear white whenever

The star’s stylist told InStyle.com that Selena absolutely loves white, and will wear it whatever the season.

“When there’s a rack of clothes, she’ll go straight to the white pieces,” Richard said.

However she does mix it up, wearing little white dresses in summer, and then switching to dresses with long sleeves or a lovely white blouse with jeans during colder months.

Feeling pretty

Selena’s approach to style is very feminine and soft, and she likes to feel pretty. She once said that the dress she most loved wearing to an event was the BCBG dark green one-shoulder that she wore to the Imagen Awards.

Block colors

It’s fair to say that Selena’s clothes are classic and very chic. She tends to wear dresses that are in all one colour, whether it be black or white, to green tones, blue, yellow, silver or red. Her dresses are usually form-fitting sold colours, with interesting details. She also once said that she does tend to gravitate toward black, stating,

“I probably have picked out so many black dresses that my Mom has stopped me from wearing, because I love that colour!”

Nailing it

This is clearly a girl who takes in to consideration every aspect of her appearance, and that includes her nails. Tending toward polish that is purple, navy, and even black, her stylist stated that Selena “likes to keep her nails dark and edgy”.

Care for the hair

Selena is renowned for wearing her hair down with some loose curls at the end. To achieve this look she has her hair blow-dried smooth and then curled to add the waves and volume. Although she told Seventeen magazine in an interview that, like most girls, she loves wearing her hair in a ponytail.

“I always felt like my hair in a ponytail made me feel sophisticated!”

Her hair style has been very consistent over the years. She sticks to her classic chocolate brown colour which prevents damage and split ends by sticking with her natural colour.

Bag lady

The star once revealed:

“When I go on the red carpet I always take a clutch or a little bag. I usually have the lip gloss that I wore, my phone, and some candy. Because wherever I’m at, I’m usually there for a really long time so I like to have candy to keep my energy up!”

Shorts go with everything

Whether it’s during the day for a spot of retail therapy, or at a celebrity event, Selena is a big fan of her shorts. During the day she’ll pair them with a nice tee for a more casual look, but loves to dress them up by pairing them with a beautiful top and heels for a more sophisticated look.

Comfort comes first

It’s a rare occasion to see the star wearing platform heels.

“When it comes to shoes it’s all about comfort,” Richard said.

Mid-heel pumps are always her first choice to pair with a glamorous dress. For a more casual day-look, she’ll often be spotted wearing flats or Converse shoes with jeans.

“I have my Mom’s old Converse from when she was in middle school. I thought it was insane they still fit perfectly fine and they’re so cute,” the starlet revealed.

Who said you need a brand new pair of shoes to look good!

Shopping splurges

Selena is a big fan of TopShop in London. TopShop is known for having the latest fashions in the women’s clothing world.

“When I went in London I had never been before, and when you go there for the first time, you spend six hours in that store looking at clothes.”

Porcelain skin

She has just celebrated her 20^th birthday, and she’s still as fresh-faced as ever. Gomez revealed that the one beauty product she “can’t live without” is Oil of Olay face wash and lotion.

“It’s geared towards an older audience, but I find that if I start working on my skin now, it can’t do me any harm!”

She is also a big advocate of sunscreen to prevent those signs of ageing. We think it’s safe to say that it’s doing the trick!

Selena Gomez has gone from Disney darling to grown up glamour girl, and it’s not all due to having the Biebs as the number one accessory on her arm! The star is making a name for herself as a bona fide style icon, and is definitely one to watch in the future.

   Even though Selena wants to act more grown up and get out of that Disney image, I still have to say I think she keeps it classy rather than trashy. Good role model appropriate clothes and style for her.
