The story follows 16-year-old Cyrus DeBarge (Williams), an aspiring musician who has a gift for rhyme yet lacks the self-confidence to take the stage.  Through his rap song he can tell his long time crush Roxanne Andrews played by Coco Jones how he feels about her.  When Cyrus and his somewhat flighty best friend Kris McDuffy enter a songwriting contest.  But when Kris is mistakenly named the winner of the contest for a song that Cyrus wrote.  Cyrus is filled with so much stage fright and being thrust into the limelight that he lets Kris take the credit for his heartfelt lyrics.
