Jena Malone To play Johanna Mason in Catching Fire

By on July 10, 2012

Lionsgate and Francis Lawrence have reportedly decided to make a casting choice (it is reported that they are in talks of the contact right now) for the sequel to The Hunger Games, Catching Fire. After much speculation and rumors they picked an unknown actress Jena Malone for Johanna Mason. Earlier this years rumors were flying about suggested and rumored stars being considered for the role of Johanna, even though many fans wanted a more unknown actress (when compared to some of the star’s names that were suggested) to fill in the shows. Well, much like some of the crew for the movie said-they listened and picked someone who does not many big box office success movie credits to her name. The movie will come out in November of 2013.

I am pleased with whom they picked. They are sticking with a theme and that is respectable. However, I am sure some people will find issue with Jena as Johanna. I personally think they picked a decent person who fits the basic description of the character in question. As for how well she does in the role, we will sadly have to wait to see how she plays Johanna. But I will say that I am putting my trust in the casting director since they did a great job with the first movie, I see no reason as to worry about this one. I am sure they picked her for whatever their reasoning was and I am going to go out on the limb and say it was the right call to make. I cannot wait to see what she will bring to the movie.

How do you feel about the choice? Does Jena look like how you think Johanna should? I do, but I know a lot of people did not like how Jennifer Lawrence looked and called her not so nice names because of it. So I do hope that Jena can avoid that, but I do doubt that will be the case for her. Either way, I am rooting for Jena and I have no doubt that she will impress all of us as Johanna. All we have to do is sit and wait for November of next year to see it all unfold before our eyes.

Jena Malone is far from an unknown actress. I think she was a good casting choice both look-wise and talent-wise. I didnt really agree with who was cast in the first movie, hopefully a new strong supporting cast can help them really pull it together for the second.

Agreed. She is far from “unknown” and her acting is and has been great. I don’t feel her acting ability “remains to be seen” and she has been an known actress longer than the lead actress Jennifer.

Hmm… I suppose you all are right on this. I guess what I meant was that she isn’t as widely known as some of the people who they suggested in the first place. :)

I have nothing against Jena Malone, But honestly I don’t think she should play this role…Naya Rivera has a some-what similar Character, She’s proved to be a great actress. – Not saying that Jena Malone hasn’t or isn’t because i do like her. – I Believe that Naya could make a Great Johanna!

Just when i read the book i could Picture Naya Rivera. Not Jena Malone, She’s not right for this role. Would i like to see her in the movie sure! but not for Johanna Mason. I just hope there not choosing her because of the racist crap –Which was REDICULOUS, and people need to grow up.– that they think may happen if they choose Naya.

All in all thats my opinion, I hope they know what they’re doing and the choice was right. I still <3 you Jena! Naya<3 Too!

Saying Jena is unknown is completely inaccurate. She’s been in a large number of films and has been nominated for Golden Globe and SAG awards. Also… a casting announcement has not been made. Your entire piece is basically BS.
