Could Nina Dobrev Play Johanna In Catching Fire? – Our Thoughts

By on April 6, 2012

The character of Johanna in the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire has yet to be cast, and we began wondering, what if one of the hottest young actresses, Nina Dobrev, played the role?

The role of Johanna Mason will be a tough one to fill.

She is sarcastic and mean-spirited. Johanna’s first meeting with Katniss involves her stripping out of her tree costume in order to make Katniss uncomfortable.

She reveals that she has no friends or family in District 7, stating “there is no one left I care about.” She won her original Hunger Games by pretending she was a weakling and a coward, so no one regarded her as a threat, but when only a few tributes remained, she revealed herself as a vicious killer.

Johanna teams up with Katniss, Peeta, and Finnick in the Quarter Quell, bringing Beetee and Wiress with her, because that was the only way to ally with Katniss. Katniss describes her presence as being akin to having an older sister who hates you. Johanna takes part in the committee to keep Katniss and Peeta alive, and helps by protecting Katniss throughout the Games. Near the end of Catching Fire she removes the tracker in Katniss’ arm by cutting it out with a knife.

Johanna is captured by the Capitol at the end of Catching Fire.

Could Nina play the role of the hardened, sarcastic and sometimes mean District 7 tribute/victor?

Note: I am assuming who plays the role in Catching Fire will play it as well in Mockingjay.

Honestly, I don’t know much about Nina Dobrev. I haven’t seen much of her work, but from what I do know about her, there are a couple reasons why she could and couldn’t play this role.

She is pretty and the right age. She is 23, and could easily pull off the Johanna look, appearance wise. Dye her hair a lighter shade (and cut it shorter), tone down the makeup, and she could definitely look the part. Because she a gorgeous young woman, she would also fit in with the whole Capitol wanting to use her thing.

I also think she could play the older sister who hates you part of her personality. She has given some pretty angry/mean looks to the camera when filming her shows and such. I don’t have any problem seeing her play the sarcastic, mean young woman as well as believing she could pretend to be weak in the Arena. Both of these work for her.

But my main problem, is the same problem I had with Selena. She is to petite and delicate looking. Not that is bad, just Johanna is supposed to be a warrior and I DO NOT think Nina could  be an axe wielding badass. If she bulked up for the role, it might make her small frame look unbalanced, so I don’t think it would work well for her.

Damon: See first off let me say I am not a Vampire Diaries watcher, but knowing she does well on that show I think she would be ready for that warrior type roll. I also disagree a bit with Sarah on her physical look, I think she could pull off the warrior look and act. Plus I think Nina Dobrev just finished up filming a movie called “Arena”, I can’t say I even know what her character does in the film since it is not out yet, but it just screams warrior to me.

The mean older sister roll is probably the easiest to pull off, and I think Vampire Diaries shows enough skin to make anything like that in Catching Fire seem common place for her. So after hearing about Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, where do you think Nina Dobrev stands in the list?

Unless you don’t mind her wearing a wig, Nina will NOT be cutting her hair any time soon.

I watch Vampire Diaries, and I like Nina, but I can’t see her as Johanna. It’s not about her acting though, for me it’s more of a visual thing: to me, she looks about the same age as Jennifer, and in the books, I pictured Johanna not just being older, but clearly older. For that reason, I also wouldn’t pick Selena or Demi. I have no idea who might fit well though :|

Nina Dobrev can’t cut her hair, the producers of TVD will never allow that to happen.

There all pretty bad choices :/. At least to play Johanna, the only ones I can see pulling off this role is easily naya Rivera and Michelle Rodriguez(might be to old) and that’s it! But my vote is for naya Rivera

I say yes, but the Vampire Diaries and Catching Fire schedule could crash. CF is set to film in August/September, and those months Nina is busy filming TVD. So no, not in a million years. What about Emma Stone? She’s a good actress.

Ummm….. yeah Johanna DOES get captured by the capitol and she gets her hair shaved off when she is captured because she wouldn’t tell anyone where Katniss and Finnick were…. And yeah… I think that Nina would be awesome to play the part… she’s also a great actor… I could go on and on bout the hunger games and who should play who… but i’ll just leave it at: Nina Dobrev SHOULD play Johanna Mason in Catching Fire… AND Zac Efron SHOULD NOT play Finnick… that would ruin the whole movie… and it takes alot toruin something as good as HG…. a whole FREAKING LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
