Could Demi Lovato Play Johanna In Catching Fire? – Our Thoughts
The character of Johanna in the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire has yet to be cast, and we began wondering, what if one of the three most famous actresses, Demi Lovato played the role.
The role of Johanna Mason will be a tough one to fill.
She is sarcastic and mean-spirited. Johanna’s first meeting with Katniss involves her stripping out of her tree costume in order to make Katniss uncomfortable.
She reveals that she has no friends or family in District 7, stating “there is no one left I care about.” She won her original Hunger Games by pretending she was a weakling and a coward, so no one regarded her as a threat, but when only a few tributes remained, she revealed herself as a vicious killer.
Johanna teams up with Katniss, Peeta, and Finnick in the Quarter Quell, bringing Beetee and Wiress with her, because that was the only way to ally with Katniss. Katniss describes her presence as being akin to having an older sister who hates you. Johanna takes part in the committee to keep Katniss and Peeta alive, and helps by protecting Katniss throughout the Games. Near the end of Catching Fire she removes the tracker in Katniss’ arm by cutting it out with a knife.
Johanna is captured by the Capitol at the end of Catching Fire.
Could Demi Lovato play the role of the hardened, sarcastic and sometimes mean District 7 tribute/victor?
Note: I am assuming who plays the role in Catching Fire will play it as well in Mockingjay.
I know a lot of people really want another actress like Jennifer Lawrence to play the role of Johanna, but since it isn’t announced yet, we are looking at young actresses, like Demi Lovato, who are not only fans of the series, but also similar in appearance to the character.
When it comes to reasons why I thinks she could, a few things comes to mind.
One thing that strikes me, is that Demi seems like a strong woman. She has been through a lot over the last few years and has braved it despite all the critism. I definitely think she could play the hardened, strong young woman.
Demi is also 19, but unlike Selena she looks older, not younger. I think we could reasonable believe her to be in her early twenties.
Also, she is not as petite as the other actresses. I think if she did the rigorous training Jennifer Lawrence did, then it could be believable that she is an axe wielding warrior woman. She could easily bulk up for the role, but still be slender and beautiful.
As it is described in the novel, Johanna having wide set brown eyes and short brown hair, if they dyed Demi’s hair a little lighter, since she already has dark brown hair, (and of course cut it short), she would also match the description.
Out of all the “Disney girls”, Demi strikes me as the most able to play the role.
Reasons why she couldn’t play the role is similar to Selena. We have never seen her play a role like this before. I don’t know how good her acting chops are, and I am not sure if she would be able to pull off both the mean, sarcastic part of Johanna as well as the weakling she portrayed her self in the Arena.
Damon: This is a tough one to write because of some of the past issues Demi Lovato has faced. Let me preface all of this by saying I am a HUGE Demi fan so don’t read into anything in a negative way like some people like to do.
I think she is actually a perfect fit for Johanna in the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire for a number of reasons. I will go with the first one being that Demi Lovato tweeted was a huge fan, which you can see over at Optionated.
She also has the warrior shoulders for someone that could play Johanna, not petite like Selena Gomez discussed first. Plus with all of the things that Demi has gone through in her life I think she could pull off the Johanna personality a bit better, she is not a bubbly like some other actresses. I am also a big fan of Demi’s acting ability (and miss her on Sonny with a Chance).
When we get back to that older sister that does not like you, I think again I can see her pulling that off, not that I think she is mean at all, just that she has a bit more range than some of the other Disney stars when it comes to something a bit darker. I mean I would like to see Miley but we know she has she would not do it because of Liam so I leave my Disney pick with Demi Lovato as well.

I definitely think that Demi has more acting chops for this role than Selena would. She will also be able to pull of the Warrior persona MUCH easier than any of the other Disney girls.

Yessss she’s a good actress and she did a great job in Grey’s anatomy I would love to see her in catching fire and I love the hunger games so I would like to see her In the hunger games

Omg this would be amazing! I would die if she played that role. I think Demi is a great actress and with this role it would be epic. It would show a different side of her. We need to circulate the actresses in use, this would be a great opportunity for something fresh and new.

I think Demi can do it. I’d really go and watch the movie if she did. If only it was brought to the directors attention. I’m sure the world would agree on Demi but if the directors don’t see this what’s the point? lol

Demi should definatley play the role of Johanna, she’s an amzing actress, as she shows us in the part she played in Grey’s anatomy as Hayley a skitzofrenic (I can’t spell that) she would be perfect for the role and It would e a great film for her to get back into acting!

Demi seems like a very strong soul. She has been through a lot and she sings with gusto but acting…? I don’t see it. Granted, I haven’t seen her Greys Anatomy episode but she was unbearabe in both Sonny with A Chance and the Camp Rock films (both were horribly produced and her acting didn’t help, either).
Personally, I’d rather they steer clear of Demi for the role (or other Disney stars). There are plenty of other actresses out there who have already shown that they have the skill to pull off the role of Johanna. Demi may have potential but she just isn’t there yet.

Actually in things like Sonny with a cance or Camp Rock or any other Disney movie/series you don’t get to see how good or bad actors are. I think you should look for the scenes of Demi in Grey’s Anatomy, it shows her acting skills a little bit better.

I think she is good since I have seen those greys anatomy episodes. But I would prefer is they went w/ someone who is not well known but up and coming like they did with the hunger games

I also think Demi Lovato would make a Great Johanna. Not only that but a lot of teen girls relate & look up to Demi Lovato as a Great Role Model. Playing the Role of Johanna would be Great for Demi because it would give more Confedence to a lot of her Lovatic Followers To Stand Up & Be STRONGER AND TO FACE LIFE’s FEARS HEAD ON!! I Think Demi could do a really really good job with such a role…I mean we never really truly know til we see it, but remember her playing Hayley in Greys Anatomy. No one expected that and she did incredible with that role and I think she could do equally incredible if she really got into character and Demi is a strong person which could lead into her playing Johanna who is strong headed and willed.
I just think it would be a perfect role and i would love to see her in such a movie.

The problem is… Demi doesn’t want to do any acting. Also she has been through a lot with body image and she’s not ready for the big screen. She is planning a world tour and working on a new album so there is NO way she can fit all that and two movies into her life without being flooded with too much work and breaking down again. She is strong but not strong enough for all the work or training, acting, touring, writing, promoting etc. I think Demi would be PERFECT for the role!! But it doesn’t seem right at the moment work wise.

I think she could pull it off better than Selena, she’s mature, she has the perfect look and her acting in the Greys Anatomy episode really impressed me. But the problem is I don’t think she wants to do any acting right not..so that’s a shame..

Lots of people are saying they aren’t going to watch the movie unless Demi does play the part of Johanna because she is the only person lots have pictured as Johanna,Trust me a lot more agree with Demi being Johanna then they do not agreeing.Demi should be Johanna.

LOL I’m sorry but Demi is a horrible actress. My Disney pick would go to Selena Gomez or Miley Cyrus. Miley wouldn’t do it because of Liam so I would go with Selena. 1. Unlike Demi, Selena can act. If any regular person saw her show, you would see that she’s a horrible actress and should stick to singing. 2. Selena could play the sarcastic bitchy role as we have seen in (monte carlo, wizards and ramona & beezus). 3. Selena could workout to get the muscles that a character like Johanna needs and any great actress like she is could pull off a role completely different from their personality.

I want her to play it but I dont know if she is ready to sart acting agian I do know that she said she is going act again but like I say I dont know if she is ready. I also want to say to all those people who say that Disney stars are terribe at acting your wroung!!!! I mean have you really seen them act. Both Selena and Demi are good actress and to all of those people who say Demi cant act have you seen Grays Anatamy she acted like a pro also when she was thirteen on the show called Prison Break she acted good. I think Demi is better at action acting if you ask me but I unlike you guys thought she acted good on SWAC but I dont know about Demi with short hair.

Umm who ever said in the comments that Demi is a bad actress….You’re blind and stupid because she is a great actress and not only that but she needs a good movie role!Everybody that likes her has been dying to see her in another movie!And besides,Selena is a good actress as well but she’s already working on two movies at the moment and we wanna see more Demi!We’re going to see a lot more of Selena!And besides she’s too skinny.And sure she could gain weight and bulk up but that wouldn’t look right for her.Demi is already the perfect size,She just needs to build up her muscles and that would be way easier for her then it would be for Selena!Im sorry but I think Demi should do this role!And besides she really deserves to play a role like this!If Demi plays this role I’m buying all the movies and books!Which I actually don’t have any!But if she played this role,I bet you money itd be way more popular than it is now!The lovatics will make sure of that!Including me!
