Burger King Goes Cage Free

By on April 26, 2012

Burger King is taking the intiative to offer cage-free eggs, chicken, and pork- a first for any fast food restaurant. The effect will take place starting in 2017. Wayne Pacelle, president for the Humane Society, approves of Burger King’s decision. Here is what he said about BK’s decision:

So many tens of thousands of animals will now be in better living conditions. Numerically this is significant because Burger King is such a big purchaser of these products.

The company’s chef brand operations officer Jonathan Fitzpatrick chimed in the following message:

We believe this decision will allow us to leverage our purchasing power to ensure the appropriate and proper treatment of animals by our vendors and suppliers.

Burger King, the third largest fast food chain, could change the way many restaurants handle livestock. It could also inspire law makers to pass more safety and ethical regulations in the near future.

It sounds like the entire restaurant industry is slowly changing things for the better. Most fast food chains have gotten a bad rap over unhealthy food and questionable business practices, so in order to stay in business they must make small changes. What do you think of Burger King’s decision to go cage free? Do you think it’s going to improve their business image? Will it make you more likely to eat from Burger King?
