Parents Ask Sesame Street To Talk About Nursing

By on January 14, 2012

Nursing babies have been a big topic as of lately with much of the media attacking it and going as far as banning it in certain public spots. Now a group of parents want to teach that it is normal again and what PBS to talk about it in Sesame Street. Back in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s they did include it by teaching that it is normal. They showed nursing mothers who were covered up and everything appeared to be okay, but by the mid 90s, the general public started becoming less tolerant of it and edited them out. Now a new petition has started and has already reached over 2,600 signatures.

I am not sure how to react to this. While nursing is a normal part of motherhood, I am not sure if it has a place on TV. I think parents should be the ones to teach it and it could upset some of those who are sensitive to it. For a public TV show like Sesame Street to take on a topic that so many are torn over is a bad idea. They could lose some viewers and thus, supporters of PBS. I hope that they can find a solution that will please everyone and still allow them to be neutral on the subject.

What side are you guys on? Should it be more public or not? I know many argue that you see less with a nursing mother than you see of others, but I just don’t think a kid’s show has a place for either. I am surprised to hear that many supporters of nursing agree, but I think we all know that would be pushing the topic a little bit too much.
