A four-year old Italian, black cat has inherited $13 million dollars. The cat, Tommaso, was a former stray on the streets of Rome. Maria Assunta, his owner, left her estate to the cat. She died two weeks ago at age 94. She was the widow of a big property owner and didn’t have any children or living relatives.

The estate of Maria Assunta has property in Rome, Milan, and Calabria plus a large bank balance. Tommaso was entrusted to a nurse who cared for Maria Assunta in her last months of life. The law in Italy doesn’t allow animals to inherit property. An attorney for the estate gave Tommaso and his inheritance to the former nurse. Tommaso now lives with the nurse, Stefania, at an unknown location outside of Rome. “I had no idea the signora had such wealth,” she told “The Guardian.”

The fact that people want to provide for their pets after their deaths is understandable. Pets give unconditional love and companionship. If indeed, people have no one else to leave their estates to, protect your pets but leave some money to other causes where it helps people also. I can’t help but wonder if part of leaving money to pets is a form of revenge in some cases.
