Walmart Helps Families On Food Stamps

According to Rock Center with Brian Williams, Walmart makes it easier for struggling families to live well within their means even when they’re on food stamps. This is because they are needing to buy food, not to buy items on sale. There are almost 46 million Americans who rely on federal assistance for food. Almost 15% of the population is on food stamps which is called SNAP.

Carol Johnston, Walmart’s senior vice-president of store development said, “That store managers have seen an enormous spike in the number of customers shopping at midnight on the first of the month.” That is when the food stamp accounts are replenished. “We’ll bring in more staff to stock. We’ll also make sure all our registers are open. In some parts of the country, 12:01 a.m. is a big day or a big night for us, actually,” said Johnston. There are a lot of professionals who need help with food, not just the deep-seated poor.

I think for a lot of people on food stamps, it is hard because they never dreamed they would need help with food. So many of these people have lost jobs and are valiantly trying to rise above their situation.
