Disney Channel’s Geek Charming Review

Nov - 14 2011 | Sarah Peel | 5 comments

Geek Charming was the new Disney Channel movie for the fall/winter season. It is about Dylan, a popular girl who is dying to win the Blossom Queen title. However, she has stiff competition and realizes that she has to face her worse nightmare in order to improve her chances of winning – she has to work with a nerd. Eh, okay a geek, as he prefers to be called. Josh knows that in order to win his dream, taking first place in a local student based film festival, he must create a dramatic film to enter. That is where he knows Dylan can be used to his advantage and so he convinces her that it can work for her as well. However, they both are quick to see that they each are more than what they seem to be.

Geek Charming is a whole lot better than the trailers shown for it. Most people are likely to assume that it is like High School Musical or Prom, but this movie is not like either. It is not a musical! This is something that I was grateful for. One thing that I also really liked about the movie was the old school feel to it. It sort of reminded me of Pretty In Pink, but that could be over the fact that both Dylan and Josh liked the wrong people – just like Andie did in the classic 80s film. However, that is just my personal opinion on how I feel the movie went. I certainly found myself laughing along with the movie like when Dylan was breaking down the word “gross” into two syllables. That was a bit too much to not laugh at how valley girl Dylan is. That made for some great humor in the movie.

Plot-wise, I will say that it was just the right age group they targeted. With all of the valley talk and cattiness, I certainly felt as if I was watching a teen movie. But I also think they made it wide enough to keep some groups of adults entertained as well – like with the funny comments that Josh’s mother made when she met Dylan. But it did stick pretty well to that teen genre that they were aiming for and that is amazing when you compare what they did with it to many other teen dramas. This felt more like it should have been an older movie, not one made in 2011, in a good way.

They had a whole slew of great characters. However, the two main ones (Dylan and Josh) were my favorites. They both were so judgmental and even Josh didn’t realize that he was no better than Dylan was at first. But they quickly saw those walls torn down, and they grew to like each other, like when Josh found out about Dylan’s mom or when he saw that she really was smart. Those moments made them see that they are indeed both human. Despite the fact that their social statuses were not be the same, in reality they have more in common than not. I think they could also teach that message to those kids who are dealing with this issue. Sarah Hyland and Matt Prokop did amazing jobs and I cannot picture the movie without the two stars.

Now for the set, I will say that I do think they went overboard with exaggeration with Josh’s car. However, it was great for the movie and it really did provide an example of their social class differences. I also really enjoyed the mall and houses, I think they looked like a good examples of the real thing. Once again reminded me of the classic teen movies back then.

Now for one of the final parts, I always typically give what I consider to be the recommend age group to see it. I personally found it fitted for all ages really. Now, while I did say that it fitted the teen genre perfectly, it does not mean that it has anything this could be found offensive in it. The humor and aim might be ideal for teens, but both adults and younger kids will likely find themselves enjoying the movie. However, they will likely enjoy it less than let us say the teens would.

For the rating, I give it a 7.5. I liked it a lot and I will watch it again when Disney airs it. However, I do feel like the fact they did stick to the teen genre so closely that it hurt it. Despite of that, I do think that they should make a sequel, but I doubt that will happen. The end seems to be pretty clear after all. How do you feel about Geek Charming?

Personally the movie was okay. Very disneyfied but then again, it IS Disney. I feel it gave so much wrong messages though. Like they didn’t focus on the fact that the girl geek liked Josh. And that Josh was a pretty good looking guy to be a geek. It’s simple when Disney tells a story about a beauty and a geek but in reality geeks don’t look like that and beauty’s don’t act like that. Disney has been telling fairy tale happily ever after stories for years. By this time people are deffinately blind to see past that.

Did they change the ending of the book? Dylan and Josh never hook up in the book, they’re just best friends. More importantly, did they leave in the “Everything But the Kitchen Sink” food thing and Neil Diamond?

Yes, they did keep the Everything but the Kitchen Sink ice cream sundae. However, I don’t recall anything about Neil Diamond.

I saw this movie on demand! It was pretty good, but Dylan had big eyes. She looked good with them too. My fav outfit of hers was the one at the beach.
