Fred 2: The Night of the Living Fred – Review
The sequel to last year’s Nickelodeon’s made-for-TV movie Fred premiered Saturday night October 22 and the title was Fred 2: The Night of the Living Fred. It picks up where last year’s end, with Judy breaking up with him (however, my guess is that she turned him down) and with him still being picked on by Kevin. However, this movie takes place around Halloween and he believes that a new girl (who is Kevin’s baby sister!) is stalking him! In addition, his mom is dating his music teacher who happens to be a vampire. He of course goes wild and brings poor Bertha into it – he seems to be blind about her crush on him. However, as always, things never go according to plan for Fred.
I am really pleased that they made a sequel and best of all is that it is as good as the first one. I might even say that this one is even better than the first, which is a rare feat for any movie to ever make. While some will argue Fred certainly acts dumb at times, I do believe that he thinks he is doing the right thing by a long shot. At one point, we were all likely that immature, maybe not so late in our lives though. As a whole, his character is great and I think I like his character even better in the movies since he is just a tad bit less hyperactive than his online version does. However, that is just my own personal preference. While that may not go along with the review, I will say that the movies make the Fred franchise more colorful and even family friendly.
For the plot, again I will say that I liked it better than the first one. Don’t get me wrong, the first one was amazing, but I think this one we saw the characters better developed. Plus Fred did not seem to be so “in love” and annoying. The fact that he made fun of Twilight (which I can happily say that I am a fan of) is great example of how far they came with it. It was filled with humor, but also safe enough for everybody. Nickelodeon once again outdid themselves and made a movie that will likely play as lot of reruns for a long time. In my opinion, I do think the plot was the best part and it should always be that way.
Now to move on to the characters, Judy did not come back and Jennette McCurdy did not return either. So they had Danielle Monet play Bertha in it this time. I will say that it was a wise casting call and she does have a similar head shape and face to Jennette, so it worked out well. We also met the net character Talia and Ariel Winter plays the new role. She adds plenty of humor and even some new depth in it. However, they also had most of the main characters and the teacher/vampire who was funny as heck. That is likely why this one episode was one of the much better ones.
As for the set and clothes, I liked it. I am a fan of Bertha’s outfits and I know they are a bit much but they certainly are better than let us say, Fred’s mother? Talia was more of a boho styled person, I personally find it amazing that she is related to Kevin because hey are pretty much the exact opposite of each other. However, I suppose that is what helped make it so great in the story line.
Family friendliness was high with this one. While the first one was a little more in your face, this one seems to be more smooth. I think it was pretty family friendly, with it being aimed at kids 7 and above. While it was humorous and the vampires were obviously fake it might still disturb some. So that is why I think kids will need to know the difference between fantasy and real life before they see it. Beyond that, I do not see anything wrong with it; in fact, I will even say that it was tame for a family movie.
For my rating, I will say that this 9.5 out of 10. I liked it; it was better than the first and funny. Why I won’t give it a full 10 is the fact that some of the original cast is not in it and it is for older kids. While none of those are wrong, they do knock it down for some. How do you feel about it? Was it as good as the first or not? Let us know in the comments below!
