The Secret Circle pilot review

The Secret Circle premiered in a magical way (pun intended). The show started off with Cassie calling her mother about a flat tire; however, their phone call gets disconnected, and her mother dies in a house fire. One month later Cassie moves to her mom’s hometown and lives with her grandmother, where she quickly finds out how secretive her mother was about her past and her father. Cassie finds out that her mom and dad were witches, which means that she is a witch, too. She also finds out that her parents were probably killed because they were witches. While she wishes not to practice being a witch, the rest of circle kids are trying to convince her to join their coven. Cassie is against it and refuses to believe them, until Faye shows off her mean side and Cassie has to undo it. She starts to consider joining, even though she is not sure if this is what she wants for herself or what her mother would have wanted.

Adam, a circle member who crushes on Cassie even though he is dating Diana, is having a hard time with Cassie’s presence. He feels connected to her but knows that they are not meant be together. His father is also grieving over Cassie’s mother and what happened in the past. Since he copes by drinking, Diana’s dad Charles threatens him to make sure he does not spill any secrets. At the end we learn that Charles and his cronies are wanting to use Cassie for their benefit, which is still unknown.

I enjoyed the premiere. It reminded me a lot of the movie The Craft, yet it’s also very different. The story was exciting, which is a key for a successful show, but I am not sure if it is a good option for kids to watch. Scenes like Cassie’s mother’s death or the storm might upset some people. However, those who love a twisted romance will most likely enjoy the show. The dynamic between Adam and Cassie reminds me of a knock-off Bella and Edward (though that is only my opinion on it–I doubt that was their goal. The dynamic just reminds me of the Bella-Edward relationship).

I have high hopes for the series. I think that most of the network’s fans will love it. It certainly was entertaining enough to capture your attention for you tune back in next week. I do think the show could do away with the cheesy romance and even some of the violence. It would have helped make the show have a stronger premiere than they had. I did enjoy it mostly and will be tuning again. I am thinking that the show will become stronger as the next few episodes air.

I know that it may sound like I am not crazy about it, but I did generally enjoy the show. I just expected something a bit more in the premiere.  What do you think about the CW’s new series?
