Nintendo To Go Into Mobile Games?

Sep - 18 2011 | Sarah Peel | 1 comment

Nintendo has had mixed reviews on their new consoles and games, leading many to wonder if they will go into mobile gaming market. Even their investors have dropped hints at the move which would potentially boost the company’s profile. However, Nintendo has no desire to switch gears and wants to stick in their current markets. Here is what the company president Satoru Iwata had to say about the idea.

This is absolutely not under consideration. If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo. Having a hardware development team in-house is a major strength

While he did acknowledge that it would be a quick way to profit, he does not see it as a way to keep Nintendo going long term. Their investors appear to be worried about Nintendo’s low sales numbers pushed them to slash the price of the 3DS. That helped boost their sales back to what they were pre-3DS. While some can argue that Nintendo has been going downhill financially, their investors beg to disagree.

Do you think this is a smart move for Nintendo? I do. I agree with the president that they need to stick with where they are. Switching to mobile markets would hurt their fan base and also cause them issues in the long run. Just because they are not doing as well as they think they should does not mean the end of their reign. It is a matter of time before they hit gold, and they know that.
