Pottermore Runs Out Of Spots For Members In First Day

By on August 1, 2011

J.K. Rowling‘s newest project Pottermore may have come out just in time for the end of Harry Potter, but fans have been flocking towards it since it was announced. This means that the first day of open registration is closed. That is right; the game filled all of their early spots that they Pottermore was allowed to give on the first day. However, they will have other days with limited amounts of news members to sign up as well.

The game will officially open later on, but they do have a limited number of seats for those who want to join now. Thus they turned it into a “game” or as others say an online experience, where you have to find the Magic Quill. As long as you answer right and the quote for the day as not been filled, you will get a spot on the site. The limited registration will last until August 6th, with no word on when the game will actually be open to all beyond sometime in September..

I have to say that J.K. must be patting herself on the back here. She really knows how to do it and make it work. I would love to see stuff from her, but it looks like this one will have to do for a while now. Are you excited for the game? I doubt that I will play it, but I know that so many fans will jump at the chance. It should be interesting to see a few couple of reviews. I doubt that the game will have all good or bad reviews. I know that is one thing I am looking forward to hearing about Pottermore.

You should totally have a look at the 40 amazing Pottermore screencaps that were released on Saturday!

Did you even do any research before writing this? It didn’t run out of spots in the first day. They have a limit for who can get in each day, and once the limit is reached they close the contest for that day. And yes, there is “word” for when it will be open to the public: October. I don’t know how you missed it, it was right on the front of the website.

Reaching their limit is the same thing as running out of spots.

No. Each day has a different limit all adding up to a million spots.

This article is very misleading. A lot of the information here is false.

    A) It’s not a game, it’s a reading experience that allows fans to enjoy the books in a “different way” (they haven’t specified about what that means yet). It will also contain background info on characters and extra info on the world of Harry Potter in general to be revealed by J.K. Rowling herself.

B)The site did not “[fill] all of their early spots early on” It just reached its day one quota. There are 7 days during the Magic Quill event and each day has its own limit of the number of people that can register.

Sheesh, people need to get their facts straight.

More like you need to understand what was written. Like I said in the comment above, reaching the limit and running out of spots are the SAME EXACT THING. There are 1MIL available spots TOTAL. Each day has only 143K spots available. That number was reached, and thus, they ran out of spots.

The article says, “the game filled ALL their early spots early on.” Do YOU understand what you’ve written? It’s very misleading and the details seem like you don’t know what Pottermore is.

This makes no sense to me. What are you talking about? I think you need to have someone read over your work before its posted.

Also, what other people have said is true. This article is misleading and mis-informed. They just ran out of spots for the day, not out of spots over all.

Refer to what Paige said. They seem to have summed it up pretty well. Just because you understand what was written doesn’t mean everybody does. If you are the writer of this, learn to articulate what you mean better. If not, understand that not everybody interprets something so ambiguous in the same bloody way.

Also, ‘A’, just thought I should add that had you looked at the headline of the article you would have noticed the blatant implications made by “Pottermore Runs Out of Spots for Members on First Day”. A more accurate headline: “Pottermore Reached Day One Member Cap Quickly”. Additionally, clearly you didn’t notice the other, bigger flaw with this article: Pottermore is NOT a game. Should anybody desire accurate information, this is not the proper venue through which to seek it obviously.

This article sounds like it was written by a 10 year old.

“I doubt that the game will have all good or bad reviews.” Wow, you sure you want to make such a bold statement there, Sarah?

This is a disastrous piece of writing! How on Earth are children to continue their learning and development if the texts they are directed to are penned by lazy, inaccurate, inarticulate adults?

  6. Potterfan :)

    August 2, 2011 at 5:31 am

Everyone, calm down. The piece was misleading, yes. I was actually scared for a moment that if we signed up on any day but Sunday we wouldn’t get in early! That’s not the case though, I presume.
Please don’t any of you pretend that the whole thing lacks any talent. I’m not sure of the background of the author, but at least she knows how to write an article and put sentences together to an extent. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this is “disastrous” because of some confused words. If any of us had done our research, we’d know for a fact that JK Rowling said she would close the registration as soon as 143k spots were reached. Because there were a total of around 1 million early-access spots avaliable, it wouldn’t be the case that they’d run out. A lot of the time, we need to use our common sense, especially in a world as mixed up as this. I think most of us got the main message of this, and that’s basically all that matters.

“at least she knows how to write an article and put sentences together to an extent” – high standards eh? appeasement like this is why kids can’t read, or can’t write coherent essays

also since when did the burden fall on the reader to provide the correct facts in a news article? I’m not saying people don’t need to use critical thinking – I’m saying they did and this article was (rightly) found lacking

don’t defend bad writing when there is good out there, it doesn’t encourage improvement (and especially don’t blame the reader)

        August 2, 2011 at 9:36 am

        Shenanigans42,
Like I said, we got the main message, that’s all that matters. I also wasn’t defending the writing as such (I admitted it was badly-worded), just trying to give everyone a different perspective of the situation. As well, I don’t think it right to criticise, and especially in this day and age with so many self-esteem problems among us. You also must admit that every author has at least one bad piece.

        Best regards

But so many things are wrong with this article. Pottermore is not a game. The spots on the website are not filled up, only the ones for the day. This article is unclear.

Do you praise a kid for picking out the color blue when you say orange because at least the kid knew that they were all colors? No, You should correct them because they will go on thinking they did the right thing.

Also, Don’t write articles if you don’t want critique.

          • Potterfan :)

            August 3, 2011 at 2:40 am

I don’t deny this at all, in fact I agree. I think we should remember that not every part of this article is false or badly-written. I think it deserves praise in that it has gotten so much attention, but it also does deserve critique. However, there is a large difference between “friendly critiquing” and just plain criticism. It’s a skill that a lot of people don’t have; praising for the good aspects and then correcting where wrong. It is a very different thing to simply hating upon the whole article. We must also remember that if we are to critique, and do it properly, we would do so in a friendly way. I agree with your last statement completely, however some comments are not critique at all, just clear verbal assault.

            Hope you’re well

The only reason this article is getting so much attention is because it has the wrong information. No one is saying “Wow! What a wonderful article! I’m going to show all my friends.” They are saying: “You need to fix this.”

And there is no friendly “critique”. Critique is meant to put the writer/artist out of their safety zone so that they can improve their work. It all depends on how the artist/writer reacts to it. And everyone is allowed their own opinion. If they feel that this is so bad that it should be taken down, then that is how they feel.

  7. All of you shut up

    August 2, 2011 at 9:23 am

Will you all shut up, we get the f***ing picture! It was baddly phased but we get the main point of it! Now SHUT IT , or face my thaft (and don’t correct me, I know I spelt it wrong >:(

    August 2, 2011 at 9:39 pm

Horrid article. I hope you don’t get paid. People who have no idea what Pottermore is or what is going on with it STILL DON’T KNOW. Please write about something you actually care to research in the future, if you continue to write.

I am very disappointed this is a top news search on Google for “Pottermore screencaps”.

Please correct your article as any Potter fan who doesn’t know much (or anything) about Pottermore would be panicking about now. You seem to have done the research but your haven’t articulated the information very well.

I think that some of the things in this article were misleading but if you knew the information before then why are you even here. And secondly it is a game if you know anything about pottermore you will get a wand and be sorted and to get the extra materials that JK is writing you have to unlock areas and sections. The site is like you being a student at Hogwarts and it is supposed to be like you are in the world of Harry Potter. You would only know this if you had all your facts straight so dont go making fun of or criticizing people when you yourself dont know what it is you are talking about.

    • Tim

      August 3, 2011 at 4:23 am

Because everyone is waiting for new information on Pottermore, and this article popped up when you search “Pottermore” on google. The title was misleading, which is why people are here. The Title makes it seem like ALL the spots were filled up for Pottermore, not just for the day. It should of said something like, “Day 1 spots on Pottermore fill up quickly.” or “Pottermore spots for Day One closed already due to popularity.”

Also, just because the website has “Interaction” features, does not make it a game. Just because you CAN play games on facebook does not mean its a GAME.

We aren’t criticizing anyone. We are critiquing what is being written.
