Miss California Alyssa Campanella Takes The Miss USA Crown

By on June 21, 2011

The Miss USA beauty pageants are just about as important in Americana culture as apple pie, weekend road trips, and the super bowl. This year’s Miss USA pageant celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Meet Alyssa Campanella, the 2011 winner of the coveted Miss USA Beauty Pageant. The 21-year-old spunky redhead may have won the competition representing the golden state as Miss California, but she’s actually a New Jersey native. Back in 2007, she even competed in the Miss Teen USA pageant as Miss New Jersey. During the show, Alyssa shared her passion for history, more specifically noting her deep fascination for the Tudor and Stuarts period. This year’s semi-finalist was Miss Tennessee Ashley Durham; runners-up included Miss Alabama Madeline Mitchell and Miss Texas Ana Rodriguez. Alyssa is the successor to last year’s winner Rima Fakih.

At first glance its kind of easy to lump all beauty pageants into superficial competition that prizes beauty and appearance before anything else. But some pageants(particularly the big televised events) are so much more. They are looking for a young lady that will best represent America. They want someone who has talent, sophistication, and someone who will set the standards as a role model for young girls. And that’s a good thing.

What do you think of the latest Miss USA winner?
