Green Lantern Lights Up The Box Office

Ryan Reynolds is seeing Green.  His new hit superhero movie the Green Lantern has shot to the top of the box office this weekend.

The superhero movie is based on DC’s very popular Green Lantern comic book franchise and often features the most famous character Hal Jordan reached the number one spot with an opening weekend raking in $52.7 million.  This movie seemed to be an easy winner among the new releases as it squared off against Jim Carrey’s family comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins coming in third with $18.2 million.  These two debuts were sandwiched between last week’s chart topper Super 8 which slipped to the number two spot.  The top five were rounded out by X-Men First Class and The Hangover Part II.

This movie has been a long time in coming as in 1997 Warner Bros had wanted Kevin Smith to script Green Lantern, but he turned down the offer believing there were others more suitable.  Warner Bros was going to change the direction of the film and make it more of a comedy but the studio dropped the idea due to bad fan reaction.  They decided to go back to the drawing board and take the route of bringing the franchise on screen through an origins story.   Have you seen the Green Lantern movie?
