Glee’s Naya Rivera Gets Signed To Label

By on June 8, 2011

Fox’s popular musical comedy series Glee has set the world ablaze with singing. The ever growing marketing machine Glee is not slowing down with churning out new stars. Many of the stars wind up with real record contracts thanks to the exposure from the comedy, along with the cult like fan base. While many of the bigger stars from the show have gotten contracts, some of the more minor ones are starting to finally get signed.

Naya Rivera has signed on with Columbia Records reported by the Hollywood Reporter. Naya will record her first album after the Glee Tour ends this month. She is joining the likes of Matthew Morrison and Mark Salling who have previously signed on with labels as well. No word on what path Naya will take her debut album in or what her plans for it may be.

Musical comedies that showcase popular music are prevalent in today’s landscape of music and TV. In my opinion songs that aren’t the first rendition are seldom as good as the originals. It doesn’t matter who does the remake or new version, it is tough to live up the original ones that are beloved by thousands everywhere. Many singers will want to perform their own interpretation of each song, which in turn can ruin them for many. Many of them attempt to make them their own, which is either too little or too much for the original song. It is a tough market out there, and while shows like this do give them the needed platform to be heard it is often under whelming market. These stars will always live under the shadow of what cover song made them famous, which may not work out in their favor by the long show.

Poorly written article! For example, you say “While many of the bigger stars from the show have gotten contracts, some of the more minor ones are starting to finally get signed.”. Only two cast members have made solo albums (Matthew and Mark) and Naya is the first to get signed to a major contract. Arguably the biggest star on the show, Lea Michele, is yet to sign anything. Also, what examples of the second rendition songs from Glee don’t you like and why? Have you even heard any of Naya’s songs?

I agree with Marisa. Poorly written and not completely accurate. Naya is very talented and I believe she’ll do fine with her music career post Glee.

Actually, Lea already has a contract, or at least a long-standing deal with Sony, to make an album whenever she’s ready )I think Amber does as well). She’s just chosen not to do an album until the show is over. And there’s nothing wrong with pointing out the fact that music is a tough market to break into. Yes, the Glee albums do very well (though I disagree that it’s hard to break out of the shadow of the original songs because some of the covers are way better than the originals), but it’s a whole different ballgame to put your own original material out there. As Salling and Morrison’s performances have proven. And despite the fact that Glee is a popular show, Naya’s had a good season, she’s still a minor player on it and has no buzz beyond the show’s super fans. Mark Salling ostensibly has a huge female following and his album still failed. Matthew Morrison has roots in both Broadway and TV and also under-performed. Good luck to Naya. She’s going to need it.

Actually, Lea Michele does not have a contract, that was a false rumor created by NY Post, an inaccurate source.

Actually, my source was Rolling Stone not NY Post so I’m inclined to believe it. And true or not, you’re kidding yourself if you think she can’t get one very, very easily if that’s revealed to be false reporting.

Naya isn’t a minor character, she’s one of the lead female protagonists and season 2 heavily centered plots involving her personal life and sexual preferences.

Poorly written article indeed, too much false claims and inaccuracy.
