Johnny Depp Putting a Pause on Pirates of the Caribbean 5
A fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean already has a script and Disney executives along with filmmakers Rob Marshall and Jerry Bruckheimer have already shown interest in pushing ahead with the project.
The only halt on the project right now is the main lead Johnny Depp who plays the iconic character Captain Jack Sparrow and refuses to rush into the project. Johnny has finished wrapping on the fourth installment of the film Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides which is due to hit cinemas later this month. Deep says that he wants to hold off on rushing into another Pirates of the Caribbean because he wants to make it “special” enough. Rumor is Depp is holding off just to see the fan reaction to the fourth installment that may either be a breath of new air to the swashbuckling series or be a last gasp for a series that could be over.
Depp also doesn’t want to be pressured into something because the studio wants the movie out by December 2012 instead he wants to be sure there is a good script and interest in movie brand before jumping in. He also wants to ensure that the wait would make it more special for fans of the series. What do you think of Johnny Depp holding off for the fifth installment?

Ever since I watched the first pirates I’ve been abnormally obsessed with it. I saw it in 6th grade. Rewind two years: in 4th grade I wanted to direct my own movies. The old feeling of wanting to film immediately shot back through my bones….and it was because of Johnny Depp. The feeling of being free and making your own destiny struck a cord, the individuality real pirates have strived for—made me obsessed for life. Maybe it’s the history geek in me (Yes…the Kraken and Davy Jones aren’t exactly historically accurate BUT it is a historically accurate legend and superstition that pirates faced). I now go to ALL the pirate fairs in my area and when I’m feeling in an “acting” mood I put on my homemade sewn (Yes, I sew) alter ego pirate costume. I started to watch Depp’s collaborations with Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter. I was more inspired than ever. I am now 17–nearly 18, and I’ve literally grown up with this movie. It has made SUCH a huge impact in my life (even lead me to play Pirates Online where I met my irl best friend who also wants to be a filmmaker), and I would give just about anything to be an extra in Pirates 5. Anyway, Pirates of the Caribbean to me is apart of who I am, what made me—me.
Johnny, I hope you decide to do Pirates 5. Your reasoning for slowing down Disney and making it “special” is a wise choice, but I hope that isn’t a cover-up on not wanting to continue the series. I saw you on Opera say you’d keep going, so I am not that concerned.
Signed,
The girl whose going to the first showing of Pirates 4 dressed up in a handsewn Elizabeth Swann dress
Pirategirl, what a great post! I’m full of admiration for you – and I think that with your determination, you will certainly succeed in your dream. Like you, I love the Pirates films – especially the very first one. Johnny Depp is a wonderful character actor, and as Captain Jack Sparrow, he is just superb. Off the scale!
As for him holding off on Pirates5, I think he’s a very shrewd and savvy (!!) businessman, and he wants the reaction of fans to Pirates4 before he makes a decision on another movie.
This is a man on top of his game, highly intelligent and sensitive to what’s going on. But he loves Captain Jack, just like we do, and he has said he would like to continue playing him until they have to wheel him on set in his wheelchair, so I don’t think we need to worry!
I wish you a day full of rainbows.
