The New Thundercats Are Revealed

By on February 1, 2011

The Thundercats are roaring out of the 80’s and onto your TV screen sometime later this year, courtesy of the Cartoon Network.

It’s easy to tell from the official Warner Brothers pic that this new incarnation of the heroes will be following the popular Anime style, and it’s been reported that the people behind it are aiming for more of a movie feel with a darker tone. Lion-O and his teammates get new clothes to go along with the new look, which is supposed to be less superhero looking and more fitting for the “swords and science” background of the revised Thundercats.

According to the press release:

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

While only the main characters (Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra) have been revealed so far, Snarf, WilyKit and WilyKat will also be appearing with brand new looks. It was also decided that the original Tygra was the boring guy of the old show so he’s been given a new background to add more dimension to the character.

What do you think of the new Thundercats? Interested in seeing how they dust off the old and make it new again?
