Tron: Legacy Rules Blasts from the Pasts at Box Office

The theater scene might have been a little confusing for people if they didn’t have a calendar around to double-check the date.

The current Hollywood theme seems to be ‘what’s old is new again’ as familiar titles get new life, and Tron: Legacy was the leader of the pack at this week’s box office.

According to MTV, the high-tech, effects-laden sequel to 1982’s Tron, starring Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, brought in $43.6 million, while a blast from the cartoon archives, Yogi Bear, rang up $16.7 million with a CGI-filled live-action adventure.

While Yogi might have been trailing a distant second place, the CGI bear voiced by Dan Aykroyd still managed to beat out the Pevensie’s third trip to Narnia. Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader only brought in $12.4 million. Don’t ya just love how I say ‘only’ as if that wasn’t a significant amount of cash? Still, what would be a huge boost to my checking account isn’t really all that hot when you glance back up at what Tron: Legacy hauled in.

The one entry in this week’s box office top 5 that didn’t have a ton of special effects or fancy locations, The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg, came in at the number four spot with $12.2 million, and the box-office dud that caught everyone by surprise, The Tourist with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, squeaked into the fifth position with $8.7 million.

I can’t say I’m really surprised at how things lined up, except for Yogi Bear. I was expecting that film to be DOA, but I guess he really is smarter than the average bear to have that kind of box office appeal. Check out the Yogi Bear trailer to see what all the fuss is about.
