Megamind the movie review

DreamWorks has produced another funny, family friendly film, this time called Megamind. This charming animated movie has 2 big stars doing some of the voices, and they also have some minor actors involved as well. Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt played the two main characters–the villain and hero. Megamind is about two rivals who have always competed with each other, though Metro Man(voiced by Brad Pitt) is the town hero, while Megamind (voiced by Will Ferrell) is Metro Man’s nemesis.

The movie has showings in 3D as well as standard 2D. The city is called Metro City (which Megamind fails to pronounce correctly), but the city is much like New York. However, they do not name a state that it is supposed to be in or even if it is run by a body of Government. DreamWorks did a great job with the animation, as usual, and keeps the movie very realistic-looking (minus Megamind’s big blue head, of course). The movie also has a few hidden jewels for adults to catch on, such as some political mockery. You can expect to find yourself laughing out loud, along with the rest of the adults attending the showing.

The characters were exactly like you would expect them to be after watching the trailers. DreamWorks offered no surprises when it came to Megamind. Megamind acted exactly as you would expect a big, blue-headed guy would, and same goes for Metro Man. An example would be when Metro Man outsmarted everybody around him; and, of course, he outsmarts Megamind on a regular basis. Even though Megamind is a villain of sorts, you will still find yourself liking him. The characters have enough of a sense of humor that is not cheesy, which is something parents can enjoy about this movie.  The plot has some great messages that I think kids and even adults can always learn. An example is when Megamind learns that it is never tool late to change. He also realizes that having everything that you could want does not equal happiness. Altogether, DreamWorks kept the plot pretty light hearted, and they did sneak in a few funny things to make the parents laugh. Yet perhaps the best part was the fact that in the movie they did not use any words or situations that might be deemed too mature for young kids, which makes this a great movie for entire families to see.

Since this movie was all animated, I really want to say that I am not much of a fan of today’s animation. Back in the day, when it really looked like animation, I loved it–but when it comes to today’s CG style, I am not a fan. However, at least with Megamind the animation did stay true to today’s standards, and they make sure it looked more like animation than reality. Blue skin and disproportionate heads help keep this movie from looking too realistic. Since Megamind shares the same creators as Shrek, it should come to no shock that they like to keep animation features looking like they’re, well, animated.

I really want to stress that this is one of the very few movies that I feel is okay for all age groups to see. This will include toddlers, which is something I rarely find in today’s children’s movies. Despite the fact that Megamind was made by Shrek’s creators, this movie is more friendly for all age groups, without some of the crude humor that Shrek and sequels had. I was shocked to find that they skipped that in this one, but it was a happy surprise to see a true family friendly movie.

For Megamind as a whole, the movie was something that I do plan on seeing again. There is no doubt in my mind that I will buy it when it comes out on DVD, and I think that DreamWorks has hit the jackpot once again. Megamind has something that most kid movies lack, and I feel that others will pick up on that, as well. It truly is a wholesome family movie and is a perfect example for what other movie production companies should aim for. For my 1 to 10 scale, this movie sits at a high ranking of 10. It was mixture of the perfect blend of a little bit of everything. While it was nothing groundbreaking, it still has a lot to offer in terms of humor and entertainment with a touch of actual lessons. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who seeks a cute movie that a whole family can enjoy.
