Disney is Finished with Fairy Tales

While animated classics like Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast will live on, Disney has announced that they are through with fairy tales. Ed Catmull, Pixar Animation Studios chief and co-head of Disney Animation, says, “Films and genres do run a course. They may come back later because someone has a fresh take on it… but we don’t have any other musicals or fairy tales lined up.”

The reign of the fairy tale princess may be over, but Disney does plan to continue making animated films, placing emphasis on movies such as Winnie the Pooh, Reboot Ralph, the Toy Story series, and other titles that may be of more interest to today’s moviegoers.

In regards to girls and their interest in fairy tales, the chairwoman of the radio and TV department at Southern Illinois University, Dafna Lemish, says, “By the time they’re 5 or 6, they’re not interested in being princesses. They’re interested in being hot, in being cool. Clearly, they see this is what society values.”

While I do agree that the old fairy tales don’t appeal to today’s audiences, I’m not certain that abandoning them altogether is the greatest move. The reboot of Rapunzel into the more hip “Tangled” looks like a nice balance between the old and the new and I think it’s a shame that Disney is changing course now that it appears they might have finally found their groove.

What! Hot? I don’t know any 5 or 6 year old girls (I have a daughter that is 5) that are worry’d about being hot. Unbelievable statement. What a clown.

I think its a shame that society has to be this way. I honestly think that this person who made this statement about 5 and 6 year-old-girls wanting to be hot is wrong and pathetic. Whatever happened to the days where good old fashioned stories were the norm? I think that most of today’s stories are crap and I’m afraid that if we continue this trend, humanity will destroy itself.

HOT?!?!? what kind of an idiot thinks a 5 or 6 year old little girl wants to be HOT and what kind of sick people would teach their daughter it is ok to be HOT at 5 or 6. I don’t know this chairwoman of the radio and TV department at Southern Illinois University, Dafna Lemish, but I think her views are scewed and she should be fired! I really find it sad that people like this think that they have the right to say what america values and thinks, and it’s even more sad that a whole lot of people who read these types of statements actually thinks its true!

I’m 17 years old and i know for a fact i will never stop loving fairytales… Disney i something i love greatly and no matter what they do it will be great. I’m sure eventually they will do something with fairytales again. As much as it doesnt seem like it, fairytales are in our culture. Ha as if there is a single person who doesnt know at least one fairytale. I may know that i’ll be a princess but that doesnt mean i don’t want to be one. Fairytales being childish, Bah! They know how to show true love and great adventures; anyone who loves to read will know this and its a shame what invalids our society brings up. Oh well i guess though most of the people who look down on those of us who actaully know things will be in for a rude awakening later in life. I know a lot of things even though i’m only 17 and i may be off to college next year but “adults” still think i’m a child. I may still squeel at the site of anything Disney but i know how to embrase my happiness and i wont end up depressed and alone when i’m older. Good Luck to you all because me and a bunch of other people will be laughing when you fall off your high horse. ^^
