Guillermo Del Toro To Make “The Haunted Mansion”

It’s just been announced at Comic-Con that Guillermo Del Toro will be taking on a new project for Disney: a remake of The Haunted Mansion, based on the legendary Disneyland ride.  Del Toro is taking on a lot of dark movies, with involvement with Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein, and Van Helsing all in development with him attached.  He’s a big fan of the ride, and is looking forward to the movie.  Here’s what he had to say about it to MTV at Comic Con:

“For some people, it’s just a ride. For others like me, it’s a way of life.  We’re really serious fanatics. I’m a big, big collector of it. I’ve been collecting not only memorabilia, but also original artifacts from the mansion for the last ten years.”

Disney, under new leadership, is planning to move to the dark side.  Rumors have swirled recently that Angelina Jolie might play the ultimate Disney villainess, Maleficent, for a Tim Burton-helmed feature film.  Del Toro will write and produce The Haunted Mansion and I bet it will be a lot more serious and scary than 2003′s movie starring Eddie Murphy.
