The 2010 sofi Awards – NASFT – BSCkids Thoughts at Summer Fancy Food Show

 BSCkids was lucky enough to attend the 56th Summer Fancy Food Show which is put on by The National Association for the Specialty Food Trade, Inc (NASFT) and held at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC.  If you do not think that is lucky enough, we had the opportunity to take a look and taste of the 140 products that were part of the 2010 sofi Silver Finalists.  Now keep in mind these 140 products were chosen from a record field of 2,257 entries across 33 Awards categories by people very far more skilled than either one of us in food.  While the awards themselves will be tomorrow I figured I would let our readers know some of our choices in a few of the categories.  Both my wife and myself attended the event and gave our thoughts and picks below.

Remember these are not all the categories by a long shot, just the ones that we thought would appeal to the BSCkids audience

Chocolate

Hanna Mini Signature Chocolate Box
- Burnt Caramel with Hawaiian Sea Salt

Both of our votes went to this wonderful chocolate.  Eclat Chocolate made a strong showing but not strong enough to overcome Knipschildt

Cold Beverage

Again both of our votes were the same on this one, the ALO Enrich proved a solid second place, but the Slow Cow Drink was refreshing. 

Confection

Split decision here, my wife loved the Maple Crunch while I went with the Raspberry Marshmallows.  She called the marshmallows too simple, while I thought they excelled because they were simple.  The raspberry worked well.

Effie’s Oatcakes

Easy decision here as the Effie’s Oatcakes were one of our favorite overall products of the show.  They go well with either milk or tea and they have a light taste.  The taste does not assault you it massages you.  Effie’s Homemade also has two other wonderful products as well which we will talk about in our wrap up.

Danielle Fruit Chips: Roasted Coconut

There was just something so interesting about these fruit chips.  As anyone can tell you I am a coconut person so these were an easy pick for me.  My wife had a harder time as she liked the Ciao Bella Gelato Company Key Lime Graham Gelto Squares as well.  In the end though the coconut fruit chips won out for her as well.

Blood Orange Sorbetto

Another easy one for me as I love blood oranges and another hard one for my wife as she was also fond of the LowCountry Product Sweet Potato Butter and also the Food Should Taste Good, INC Multigrain To-Go Pack.  The flavor was wonderful for the sorbetto and it was on of the products that I could have eaten a lot more of.

So those were our picks for some of the sofi awards this year, I am very curious to see who the winners are tomorrow!
