Wizards of Mickey #1 – review
The epic WIZARDS OF MICKEY tale continues here in its own ongoing series! Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy continue to struggle in the Grand Wizard’s tournament, determined to win back the Diamagic from Peg-Leg Pete the Great! But who is the mysterious master that pulls Pete’s strings?
Our story so far…Mickey has formed the Wizards of Mickey with Donald and Goofy to enter the Great Sorcery Tournament. Here he hopes to win back the Miceland village’s Diamagic stolen by Peg-Leg Pete, under orders from the Phantom Blot. Mickey successfully wins back the Diamagic from Pete’s team, However, Mickey learns that the Phantom Blot has taken his master, Nereus, captive. Events take another unexpected turn when the Wizards of Mickey join with Team Magma Fire after Donald’s pet dragon, Fafnir, is Kidnapped by Pete’s team in their quest to find a way into the dragon kingdom. Together, they foil Phantom Blot’s plot and Mickey receives a Techno-charm which lets him communicate with Nereus.
Following these events, Mickey’s gang befriends Team Diamond Moon, consisting of Daisy, Minnie and Clarabelle. Shortly thereafter they defeat Team Tapestry and recover the Stone Diamagic, hoping to use it to free Nereus from his prison…
Picking up the story that began in Walt Disney Comics, The Wizards of Mickey is great fantasy fun. However, it does bear some writing similarities to UltraHeroes. There is quest to complete similar to the UltraMachine, but in this book it is called the Great Crown. Other than this minor plot element, everything else is original and fun. There are not enough fantasy comics on the market and even less for young readers.
Kids who love Anime based upon trading card games will enjoy this series. The quests and battles will feel very familiar to TCG players, while still giving a new spin on an old fantasy genre. This title is bit more humorous when compared against UltraHeroes, but is no less engaging. The artwork bears a resemblance to traditional Disney comics and is very colorful. BOOM! and Disney have created another great title and I am happy that BOOM! decided to spin it off as a monthly series. Mickey has always been a character I was on the fence about. He is generally portrayed as meek and a bit of a dork. However, he shines in this comic and is finally given a chance to grow as a character.
