Disney’s Hero Squad: Ultraheroes #4 – review

May - 11 2010 | PLMII | no comments

The UltraHeroes are in Good Spirits after Duck Avenger’s victory against the formidable Phantom Blot. The threat of the Ultramachine is all but neutralized now that the forces of good and evil have the same number of Ultrapods…At least that’s what out heroes thought until Emil Eagle informs the group that he has kidnapped one of their own…

This episode holds two shockers that are game changes for both sides of this ongoing battle over the Ultrapods. First, Cloverleaf has turned sides and wishes to joing the Sinister squad taking their membership to eight. Emil Eagle discovers that a seventh Ultrapod exists and it is actually Lyth.

It was great to see Scrooge McDuck free the UltraHeroes from their capture by the Sinister 7, and hear his quip about escaping more than once while being Emil’s clutches. The use of characters like Scrooge and Mickey Mouse gives this series a sense of balance, since neither have any super powers. Despite there lack of powers they still get things done and save the day, a good lesson for young readers.

I did not see Cloverleaf ‘s betrayal nor Lyth’s true identity coming and it was really cool seeing these secrets unraveled. I know I said it in a previous review, but I want to reiterate, that this comic could hold its own with a few other superhero comics.

The conclusion to the story of the Red Bat was a real laugh and to have the Beagle Boys make an appearance, made this story all the better. These origin stories are a real treat and allow the reader to learn about the heroes without a long drawn out exposition. I hope the writers continue this trend and I look forward to possible back stories for the Sinister 7.

Overall this was great issue and left quite a cliffhanger at the end. I very pleased with this title so far and expect big things from it in the future. It seems the battles only get more epic with each issue and unlike most other titles, I do not have to read several issues just to see some super-powered action. While reading this title, all I can think about is the great Saturday morning cartoons from my childhood and the anticipation I felt awaiting the next installment of my favorite cartoon. See you next issue of the UltraHeroes!
