Last week, Variety reported that legendary director Martin Scorsese may be eyeing adapting the award winning kids book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and went as far as to say it may even be his next project.
The book was written by Brian Selznick in 2007, and won Randolph Caldecott Medal for children’s fiction the following year. It was published by Scholastic Press. GK Films is set to independently produce a live-action feature of the picture book and is reportedly in discussions with several studios including Sony and Paramount about distribution. Shooting is scheduled to start on June 1st in London. I did some searching and found the book trailer and a rather lengthy interview the author did with Reading Rockets and embedded them below.
Book Synopsis – Orphan, clock keeper, and thief, Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks with an eccentric, bookish girl and a bitter old man who runs a toy booth in the station, Hugo’s undercover life, and his most precious secret, are put in jeopardy. A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a stolen key, a mechanical man, and a hidden message from Hugo’s dead father form the backbone of this intricate, tender, and spellbinding mystery.
